EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an extensively researched and highly effective psychotherapy technique. It is a proven method aimed at helping individuals recover from trauma and various other distressing life experiences including the following:
It is powerful and effective therapy and is highly recommended for successful treatment of trauma. It involves use of eye movements or other bilateral stimulation strategic approach. The process releases information trapped in the mind and body to be processed and released thereby alleviating the symptoms of distress which could range from disturbing images and body sensations, debilitating emotions to negative restrictive beliefs about self and others.
EMDR is a revolutionary therapy holding a record for being instrumental in helping clients across all age groups from various traumas such as childhood abuse, accidents, medical procedures, domestic violence, sexual abuse, assaults, war veterans, natural disasters.
This procedure has been extensively researched and is an evidence-based therapy for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Apart from PTSD, EMDR can also effectively treat various psychological effects of traumas and symptoms such as-
4. Low self-esteem creativity blocks
5. Relationship difficulties.
EMDR heals faster than the traditional therapy and clears emotional and physical blockages. Reports have also revealed that clients experienced a sense of joy, openness, and deep connection with others. EMDR can be referred to as a quantum leap in the human ability to heal trauma and maladaptive beliefs.
Attachment-focused EMDR (AF-EMDR) is client-centered technique emphasizing on a reparative therapeutic relationship. It involves use of a combination of:
(1) Resource Tapping™ (Parnell, 2008) for strengthening clients and repairing developmental deficits
(2) EMDR to process traumas
(3) Talk therapy to help integrate the information from EMDR sessions.
AF-EMDR covers the use and benefits of EMDR combined with bilateral stimulation for helping clients who respond less to traditional EMDR protocols owing to acute or chronic relational trauma and attachment deficits such as- physical or emotional neglect by caregivers, lack of safe space, childhood physical or sexual abuse, neglect, early losses, birth trauma, medical trauma, parental drug or alcohol abuse, caregiver mis attunement and secondary trauma.
Such clients often get depressed and suffer from relationship difficulties or problems at work. They don’t feel fully alive. In many cases, childhood trauma affects their sense of safety and ability to form close emotional relationships in adulthood.
By incorporating an attachment-repair orientation to all phases of EMDR work successfully helps to alleviate the symptoms.
