What Is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an extensively researched and highly effective psychotherapy technique. It is a proven method aimed at helping individuals recover from trauma and various other distressing life experiences including the following:

AF-EMDR covers the use and benefits of EMDR combined with bilateral stimulation for helping clients who respond less to traditional EMDR protocols owing to acute or chronic relational trauma and attachment deficits such as- physical or emotional neglect by caregivers, lack of safe space, childhood physical or sexual abuse, neglect, early losses, birth trauma, medical trauma, parental drug or alcohol abuse, caregiver mis attunement and secondary trauma.

EMDR Therapy Session typically includes use of bilateral stimulation for processing of trauma, negative unprocessed memories which interferes in one’s day to day life. Those distressing memories are healed by bringing a proper closure to those.

EMDR is not done in the first session itself. The therapist needs to know about trauma details, client’s history along with their present resources Factors like stabilization and establishment of a therapeutic relationship are taken into consideration prior to starting on with EMDR.

If it’s a single episode Trauma, it usually can be cleared in 1-2 sessions whereas Complex traumas, attachment developmental trauma requires more sessions. The time taken also depends on the medical history of the individual and present ongoing stressor. Hence, the total number of sessions taken for significant results may vary from one person to another.

EMDR therapy is usually given as the following:

  • Short focused treatment
  • Part of a longer psychotherapy program
The psychotherapist will decide on this, keeping in mind the present health condition of the client. Usually, the sessions may last anywhere between 60 and 90 minutes.
